Lunch with The Day Crew

My home department is technically what's know as a combination department. In our case we have a day crew made up of full-time paid firefighters, and volunteers that handle nights and weekends. Since I am not part of our department's paid staff I usually end up spending most of my time with the volunteers. The chief has been encouraging me to spend more time with the day crew for months now. Today I did. It was a slow day, there were no calls while I was at "the house."

The highlight of my day… Continue

Christmas Message 2009

For a week or so now I have been thinking and praying about what I wanted to say to you for Christmas. As this process unfolded I came upon an interesting question. Was Christ the original first responder ? I think he just might be.

Let's take a look at it,

Jesus was born to save the world. Responders are born to save people from a variety of perils.

Responders deal with people from all different backgrounds, even those most others would ignore. Christ ministered to lepers, and Samaritans and… Continue

Happy Thanksgiving !!

Tomorrow is the day we in this country traditionally give thanks to God for the year's blessings. To be sure God gives us things to be thankful for every day, and we should make a practice of thanking him every day ! However setting aside one day a year to focus on expressing gratitude to the Almighty is not a bad practice. Unfortunately my secular job being in retail I will be working tomorrow. But I will be taking time throughout the day to remind myself of the many many things I have to be th… Continue

They're Not In Our Path Accidentally !

Recently I experienced two events in back to back days that reminded me how active God is in empowering our ministries. The other day I was in the E.R. at our local hospital. Not being on department business I didn't have my chaplain's uniform on. However as is my practice when in the hospital I did have my Texas Medical Center clergy I.D. badge on. I went to get my wife a soda from the nearby machine. There I met a man and his miserably ill little son about 2 years old. The poor child was feeli… Continue

Memorial Day Thoughts

As many of you know years ago I was a military policeman in the Texas State Guard. Back then I used to tell the guys in my squad " I don't care what command tells you about how safe this mission is. The fact always is there are people in this world that will shoot you dead just for the uniform you have on." This is just a very small fragment for what it is like for those who serve in our military even in peace time. Of course as I write this our nation is at war, and not at peace. Things are evn… Continue

Your comments have been so helpful to me. I wanted to share my day's experience with you. I woke up to the phone ringing, and that's never good before 7 a.m. My police officer husband had been in a shooting ... basically "suicide by cop." And all day I feel like I've been ministering to others as they talk about the shooting with me. I got to church to sing my offering song this morning (it would happen on the ONE DAY I have to sing) and chuckled to find out that the theme of the service was basically that your calling might be hard! Oh really!!! Well, then I sang my song for 2 services and didn't lose it because I put my emotional stability in the hands of God.

I am currently a police dispatcher. I can talk to anyone about almost anything. What I am concerned with is this: What education do I need to obtain, and can I do this while working with a 2-year-old child at home? Is it possible to take classes online? I have so many questions but that's a good place to start.

My department has a voluntary chaplaincy with the standard 5 years in ministry as a requirement. I am particularly interested in law enforcement because that is what I do. My husband is a deputy sheriff so I see every day what these people go through and I think I could be a good ear for them. On Sunday night I was reading my Bible and I heard the words "police chaplain" as if someone said them out loud, but nobody else was in the room. I believe that was God speaking to me. It's about time I listened to Him.

Thank you VERY Much! That is what I was REALLY Looking for to guide my prayer. Sometimes I do really good and sometimes, not so good, but I really just want to let this flow from my heart while remembering key points. And you hit on something. Something IMPORTANT. It was just posted in christianfirefightersassociation on FFN and the guy said I was pulled to say this, not sure why or who it's for but I have to put it out there. And his post was about how "We are NEVER alone. We go into the fire being guided by our Lead but regardless we are in there with the Lord by our side." You know what, I'm going to post it. AND I am going to be sure to incorporate it into my invocation.

Have a Very Blessed day and I Pray we all get to enjoy some wonderful SNOW tomorrow!

In Faith,

Michael

The Chaplain program here at the Department of Homeland Security and Emergency Management is new and my focus will be on disaster ministries. I do not remember who told me about Christ 4 Responders but I am glad to have found it.

Rev. Robert,
God bless you man of God and we know that all things work for good to them that love the Lord. One thing I know is that, God knows his time when to bless and when to begin sending in to us the right people to stand with us. I have been encouraged to say to you that, any vision always will begin by one and others just come to join that vision to make it a complete vision. However patience is something that we need for us to see what we began come in to reality. One time, when I failed to go on with my education, when I stayed at home after dropping out of school due to lack of school fees, when three years of staying home without school fees were complete and I saw that it was as if nothing was coming along, I really had to begin fainting in my spirit. I decided to go to senior people to report my dad so he can be arrested for refusing to pay for my school tution. After I was given a letter to sermon my dad to go to see the lawyer, when I was carrying it to get it to my dad and a few kilometers to our home there came lightening that was about to hit me and instead it had to hit a tree close to me and the tree turned in to urshes and my life was spared. When this happened and I came back to my senses, I was ministered to that the reason for this was my lack of patience with the Lord and I was wrong getting my parent to the lawyer. I decided to get all the letters and burned them and said if it is getting back to school I will not. I did not tell my dad up to now since 1993 about 20 years now. After this incident, two weeks latter my dad came to me by himself and said I want to take you back to school and up to now he educated me.
The devil wanted to snatch my education by making me cross with my biological dad and my education would be no more.
Rev. Robert, dont give up, God is bringing people to join this network. I have seen a good man like Joshua. This is new to this network and the God who brought me to know your network when I am miles away, is the same God who shall bring in many people to join. Otherwise my wife and I encourage you to stand in faith and many are the people who are joining.
Have peace and total peace in you and God knows. Thank you for the commend brother!
Your friend Pastor Richard in Kenya
